Dr. B.R. AMBEDKAR COLLEGE

The history of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College, Betai is deeply rooted in the social, economic and historical circumstances of the region. Situated in a border area of Nadia district, Betai was, until the 1970s, a relatively underdeveloped and predominantly rural settlement, with extensive areas of jungle and limited opportunities for higher education. The establishment of the College in 1973 marked a significant turning point in the educational and socio-cultural development of the locality.

The social history of Betai is closely connected with the experience of migration and displacement following the Partition of India in 1947 and the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. A considerable number of displaced families from the erstwhile East Pakistan and, subsequently, Bangladesh settled in and around the region. Many of these families faced severe economic hardship and social uncertainty, yet they nurtured a strong aspiration to provide their children with opportunities for education and a better future.

The local population included a substantial proportion of people belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, minority communities and economically disadvantaged sections of society. In such a socio-economic context, access to higher education was extremely limited. The establishment of a degree college therefore emerged not merely as an institutional requirement but as a collective aspiration of the local people.

The people of Betai recognised that education could become an instrument of social mobility, empowerment and transformation. Their desire to educate the younger generation provided the foundation for a sustained local movement towards the establishment of an institution of higher learning. The College thus represents the determination of a community that, despite the difficulties of displacement, poverty and geographical marginalisation, placed education at the centre of its hopes for social advancement.

A significant role in this educational endeavour was played by the noted local educationist Haran Chandra Biswas. With his initiative and support, the College was established in 1973, creating an important opportunity for students of Betai and the surrounding areas to pursue higher education without having to travel far from their homes. The establishment of the institution transformed the educational landscape of the locality and gradually helped Betai acquire a distinct place on the educational map of the region.

In recognition of his contribution to the cause of education, a separate building was subsequently constructed and named Haran Chandra Smriti Bhawan. The building stands as a lasting reminder of his commitment to the educational development of the local community.

The founding history of the College is therefore inseparable from the history of the people of Betai. It emerged from a collective desire to overcome educational deprivation and create new possibilities for future generations. Its origins reflect the belief that education is a powerful means of empowerment, social transformation and human development.

Named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution of India and a lifelong advocate of education, equality, social justice and the dignity of the marginalised, the College carries a particularly meaningful legacy. Its historical foundation in a socially and economically disadvantaged region resonates with Ambedkar's vision of education as an essential instrument of emancipation and empowerment.

Since its establishment in 1973, the College has continued to evolve in response to the changing educational needs of the region. Today, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College stands as an important institution of higher education in Nadia district.
